Avalanche dynamics

With MPM, avalanche flow simulations were performed for different snow properties on ideal terrains to better understand the mechanical origin of flow regime transitions in snow avalanches. Several types of snow avalanche reported in the field were reproduced as well as complex processes such as snow granulation. The model was used to simulate avalanche dynamics on 3D real terrain, and was validated using full-scale measurements. Simulation including an erodible bed zone allowed us to study in detail the influence of snowpack properties on entrainment propensity and its effect on the flow mobility.
